Residents of Ogheghe and Charismatic Road, off Ekenhuan Road in Benin City, have applauded Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, over the ongoing reconstruction of their long-neglected access road.
For years, the road had deteriorated into a stretch of erosion gullies, flood-prone sections, and crater-sized potholes, making vehicular and pedestrian movement difficult, particularly during the rainy season. Community members say the intervention by the state government has brought renewed hope and immediate relief.
“The deplorable condition of this road inflicted persistent hardship on all of us, especially during the rainy season when erosion, flooding, and deep potholes made movement almost impossible,” said Osas Uyi, a resident of the area.
According to residents, commercial drivers routinely avoided the route due to its poor state, forcing commuters to trek considerable distances to access transportation along more motorable roads. The situation, they noted, also affected small businesses, as customers found it challenging to reach shops and offices located within the neighborhood.
Shop owners along Charismatic Road disclosed that the ongoing construction work has already begun to restore confidence among residents and prospective investors. They expressed optimism that upon completion, the project would stimulate economic activity and improve security within the community.
Mama Peace, a roasted plantain vendor at Charismatic Junction off Ekenhuan Road, urged contractors to maintain high construction standards and adhere strictly to project timelines. “Our advice to the contractors is to uphold quality and deliver within the stipulated timeframe,” she said. “We pledge our continued support for Governor Monday Okpebholo’s development agenda.”
Residents described the project as concrete evidence of the governor’s commitment to grassroots infrastructure development and improved living standards across Edo State.
The road construction forms part of the administration’s broader infrastructure renewal drive aimed at rehabilitating critical access routes within urban and semi-urban communities.
