A Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), The Nigerian Women Trust Fund has decried the underrepresentation of Persons With Disabilities (PWDs), youths, and women in the nation’s decision-making.

The organisation stated this during a 2-days capacity building for PWDs, women, youths, and political actors in Calabar on Wednesday.

Speaking on the theme: “Amplifying Women and Youth Voices For Inclusive Democratic Governance in Cross River,” Dr Oriri Ewa noted that this is in spite of their demographic significance.

He stated that their participation is vital for inclusive governance, equity, and national development because the group constitutes the majority of Nigeria’s population.

Ewa added that inclusive participation strengthens democratic by ensuring that governance reflects the needs and aspirations of all citizens.

“Women, youth, and PWDs bring unique perspectives, experiences like, and solutions that contribute to more effective policy outcomes and sustainable development.

“Representation of women, youth, and PWDs enriches governance and policy making,” he stated.

Speaking further on inclusivity, the resource person identified the role of advocacy in promoting inclusive governance, particularly in ensuring women, youth, and PWDs are represented in decision-making.

He, however, noted that advocacy requires clarity of purpose, credible data, sustained engagement, and partnerships with key actors in government and society.

Meanwhile, the training coordinator,
Mrs Zainab Tanko said the training was organised for stakeholders to share ideas on how to enhance Nigeria’s democracy.

She said this is particularly so as the 2027 election circle approaches and stressed on the need to bring all stakeholders onboard for inclusivity.

According to her, “this gathering brings together passionate women, young leaders and persons with disabilities who are determined to make politics and governance across Cross River state more inclusive and accountable.

“Your presence here today sends a powerful message that our democracy can only thrive
when everyone has a seat at the table.

“We will be learning, sharing, and building skills on advocacy, leadership, and political engagement, all aimed at strengthening our participation and influencing ahead of the 2027 elections.

“Our main goals are simple, to deepen knowledge of political processions, to build participants’ confidence and network, to equip them with the tools to drive meaningful change within their communities and institutions.”

Participants were drawn from traditional institutions, youth and women organizations, PWDs, and political class.
