In a decisive move to end lingering leadership disputes in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area, the Edo State Government has revoked the traditional appointments of two community leaders, bringing a dramatic twist to the tussle over the thrones of Ososo Kingdom and Ikpeshi/Egbegere Clan.

According to an official statement signed by Umar Musa Ikhilor, Esq., Secretary to the State Government, the revocation affects Mr. Bamidele Obaitan, formerly appointed to the vacant stool of Ososo Kingdom, and Zaiki Luckman Odamah III, formerly recognised as the ruler of Ikpeshi/Egbegere Clan.

The state government said the decision followed a thorough review of the “circumstances surrounding ongoing disputes” in the affected areas, stressing that the action was taken “in the interest of peace, stability, and due process.”

Pending the resolution of the rightful heir to the Ikpeshi/Egbegere throne, Mr. Nicholas Odamah has been appointed Regent to oversee the affairs of the clan in a custodial capacity. He is expected to work closely with the government to maintain order and ensure compliance with all directives.

For Ososo Kingdom, the government has directed the Council of Chiefs, Elders of the four quarters (Unukhus), and other stakeholders to immediately convene, deliberate, and submit a consensus candidate for appointment to the vacant stool. The nomination is to be made through the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs within a period to be officially communicated.

The state stressed that the selection process must reflect “the customs, rotation principles, and collective will of the Ososo people.”

Both deposed leaders, Mr. Obaitan and Mr. Odamah have been ordered to hand over all government properties, instruments of office, and materials in their possession to the Chairman of Akoko-Edo Local Government Council without delay.

The government urged residents of Ososo, Ikpeshi, Egbegere, and the entire Akoko-Edo area to remain calm and law-abiding, assuring that security agencies have been mobilized to maintain peace and protect lives and property.

Reaffirming its commitment to justice and tradition, the Edo State Government stated that it “remains dedicated to fairness, due process, and the preservation of traditional values while safeguarding peace and unity across all communities in the state.”
