The opposition People’s Democratic Party, PDP is in panic as the Appeal Court is set to deliver a judgment that may return Uche Secondus as PDP National Chairman.
Secondus who is not happy with the way he was treated is in court to enforce his rights enshrined in the PDP constitution that he is entitled to complete his 4 years tenure and seek re-election.
All the efforts made by former Senate President David Mark to get Secondus to withdraw his court case failed as Wike refused to opt for an out-of-court settlement.
The October 30 and 31st national convention of the PDP is exactly two weeks from now and the party is scared that the unexpected may happen as there are strong indications the Appeal Court will give judgment on Secondus case before the National Convention of the PDP.
The party understands that if the Appeal Court gives a judgment in favor of Secondus, the National Convention of the party may be canceled because Secondus will be returned as PDP National Chairman and going by the constitution of the PDP all the actions taken in his absence will be null and void.
According to This Day newspaper, some selected PDP stakeholders have reached out to Secondus to plead with him to withdraw his case against the party to avoid any consequences which may negatively affect the party.
My understanding is that the PDP is worried that Secondus may get a favorable judgment and that will alter all plans of the party. Already some loyalists of Atiku Abubakar have asked the PDP to ensure that it resolves all issues with Secondus.
I don’t blame Secondus because he felt humiliated. The PDP constitution made it clear that is only the NEC of the PDP can remove the National Chairman from office.
That was why David Mark pleaded with Wike severally to opt for an out-of-court settlement so that Secondus can see a reason to withdraw his case.
Mark understands that Secondus has a point and that it was unfair to force him out of office when his tenure has not ended. Iyorchia Ayu the consensus candidate for PDP National Chairmanship will hope that Secondus doesn’t get a favorable judgment.
Otherwise, the PDP may be thrown into confusion which may unsettle it ahead of the 2023 general election.
