Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, on Thursday issued a stern warning to kidnappers, cultists and other criminal elements, declaring that his administration would pursue swift prosecution of offenders and ensure they face the full weight of the law.

Speaking during the parade of suspects at the Edo State Police Command headquarters in Benin City, the governor said his government was finalising plans to establish a special court dedicated to handling kidnapping and cult-related cases with accelerated proceedings.

Okpebholo’s remarks came after the arrest of a suspect linked to the kidnapping incident that occurred on Sunday at the Vegetable Market in Benin City. According to the governor, he immediately directed the Commissioner of Police to ensure those responsible were apprehended.

Police investigations led to the arrest of one suspect, while another was reportedly killed during the operation. Two other members of the gang remain on the run.

The governor warned that criminals would find no safe haven in Edo State, stressing that security agencies had intensified efforts to track down offenders and their sponsors.

“We are working day and night to make sure this land is safe,” he said, assuring residents that the state government remains committed to protecting lives and property.

Okpebholo also defended the Federal Government’s security efforts, arguing that improved operational results by security agencies reflect adequate support and funding from President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

He urged residents, particularly young people, to avoid criminal activities, noting that lawful living remains a better option than risking severe legal consequences through crime.

In recognition of the successful operation, the governor presented ₦10 million to the police officers involved in the arrest of the kidnap suspect, commending their dedication and professionalism.

The Edo State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Monday Agbonika, disclosed that investigations were ongoing and that security operatives were intensifying efforts to apprehend the remaining suspects.

Items recovered from the arrested suspect include a red Lexus RX 350 (registration number EKP 848 AE), a pump-action shotgun, two live cartridges, a motorcycle, and ₦2.25 million in cash, believed to be proceeds of criminal activity.

Agbonika thanked Governor Okpebholo for his continued support to the command and expressed appreciation to the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, for his leadership and guidance.

He also appealed to members of the public to continue providing timely and credible information to aid ongoing security operations across the state.
