There was palpable excitement on Charismatic Church Road, off Ekenhuan Road in Benin City, as residents trooped out in large numbers to cheer Governor Monday Okpebholo during his inspection of an ongoing road construction project that has revived hope in the area.
The 1.4-kilometre stretch, currently under construction by Place of Peace Investment Limited, is seen by locals as a turning point after years of neglect that left the road nearly impassable.
Cheers and chants filled the air as the governor arrived, with residents expressing gratitude over what they described as a long-overdue intervention. For many, the project signals relief from years of hardship tied to poor road conditions that hindered movement and economic activity.
Blessing Patrick, a resident, recounted the struggles endured by those living in the area. “For many years, we no dey pass this road. We thank Okpebholo for this work,” she said, adding emotionally that the road had long been in a condemned state before the current administration’s intervention.
Another resident and trader, Osarunwense Igbinovia, highlighted the security and environmental challenges that plagued the area. According to her, severe erosion once damaged nearby buildings, while criminal activities thrived due to the road’s poor condition.
“I dey sell for junction. This road has been very bad. I witnessed when erosion entered one upstairs. Thieves were operating around here. But now, the road has turned to good,” she said, expressing optimism about the transformation.
The reconstruction is expected to improve access, stimulate local business activities, and enhance safety in the community. For residents of Charismatic Church Road, the project represents not just infrastructure development, but a long-awaited return to normalcy.
