EDO GIRLS SPIKE TO GLORY: State’s Young Volleyball Stars Dominate Nationals, Earn Tickets to Represent Nigeria in China [PHOTOS]

Edo State has once again stamped its authority on the national sports map as its young volleyball stars delivered a stellar performance at the recently concluded National Under-15/16 School Volleyball Championship in Abuja.

In what sports analysts are calling a “golden comeback”, the Edo female volleyball team dazzled spectators with skill, teamwork, and determination culminating in a hard-fought gold medal victory that crowned them national champions.

The triumph marks Edo’s strongest showing at the championship in years, a testament to the revitalized energy in youth sports and education under the leadership of Governor Monday Okpebholo.

Leading the jubilant delegation, Ms. Ebanehita Sonia Omonzane, Executive Chairman of the Edo State Universal Basic Education Board (Edo SUBEB), hailed the team’s discipline and drive, describing their victory as “proof that Edo is reclaiming its place as a leader in education and sports.”

She expressed heartfelt gratitude to Governor Okpebholo for his unwavering support ensuring that the students’ welfare, security, and morale were top priorities throughout the tournament.

The celebration didn’t end with gold medals. In a thrilling bonus for Edo, three standout players from the championship were handpicked to represent Nigeria at the upcoming Volleyball Championship in China a feat Ms. Omonzane called “a monumental honor for Edo and the entire nation.”

She also praised the unsung heroes behind the victory the teachers, coaches, and school administrators whose mentorship, patience, and commitment she said “turned potential into performance.”

Reaffirming Edo SUBEB’s commitment to Governor Okpebholo’s reform agenda, Ms. Omonzane emphasized that the integration of sports into academics remains a cornerstone of the state’s educational vision.

“Our goal,” she noted, “is to raise children who are not only intellectually equipped but also physically confident and globally competitive.”

She called on parents, teachers, and community leaders to rally behind the government’s push for youth development through sports and education, describing them as “the twin pillars of Edo’s future.”
