The Armed Forces of Nigeria has announced that sixteen of its officers will face military disciplinary action following their arrest for alleged professional misconduct and breach of service regulations.
According to a statement issued by the Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, the arrests were made during a routine military exercise that uncovered acts considered incompatible with the values and standards of military service.
Preliminary investigations revealed that many of the officers’ grievances stemmed from perceived career stagnation, particularly repeated failures in promotion examinations. Brig. Gen. Gusau, however, emphasized that such frustrations could not excuse misconduct within the ranks.
He noted that some of the officers had already been under military jurisdiction for other offences, either awaiting trial or undergoing disciplinary proceedings, before their most recent infractions.
“Those found culpable will be subjected to the military’s disciplinary process in line with established protocols. The Armed Forces remains committed to accountability and the preservation of professionalism within its ranks,” Gusau stated.
The Defence Headquarters reassured Nigerians that the matter would be handled transparently, stressing that discipline is the backbone of the military and cannot be compromised.
