Okpebholo Visits Arase Family, Describes Late IGP as Pillar of His Political Success

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has paid a condolence visit to the family of the late former Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Solomon Egiator Arase (Rtd), who passed away recently at the age of 69.

During the visit to the Arase family residence in Benin City, the Governor reflected on the former police chief’s remarkable career and his personal support during his early political journey.

Okpebholo described Arase as a “pillar” in his path to becoming governor, recalling how the late IGP encouraged him at the outset of his governorship ambition.

“When I first decided to pursue the governorship of Edo State, the very first person I went to see was Arase,” the governor said emotionally. “He listened to me patiently and assured me of his support. He even facilitated my first meeting with the Oba of Benin, a step that proved crucial in my political success. How could I ever forget such a man?”

The governor expressed deep sorrow over Arase’s passing, describing it as a painful loss. “It is unfortunate that he had to leave us at this early stage, but God knows best. What truly matters is how we live our lives. Your husband lived well,” he told the grieving family.

Okpebholo assured them of the Edo State Government’s support and announced that the state would play a role in the burial arrangements as a mark of respect.

Responding on behalf of the family, Arase’s first son, Junior Arase, thanked the governor for his visit and kind words.

Also present was commissioner-designate, Kassim Afebua, who praised the late IGP’s legacy, highlighting his role in pioneering community policing and dismantling police roadblocks, reforms that reshaped security operations nationwide.

Governor Okpebholo later attended the 10th remembrance of the late Mrs. Imuegbeyogho Odubu (née Osunde), alongside Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Dennis Idahosa, and other dignitaries.

The late Solomon Arase is being remembered as both a distinguished public servant and a mentor whose influence extended beyond policing into politics and leadership in Edo State.
