Edo State deputy governor, Rt. Hon. Dennis Idahosa on Tuesday challenged the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria (AMLSN) to carryout research that would boost public health in the country.
He also tasked the association to set up a massive production line as part of effort to address the menace of some diseases.
In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Friday Aghedo, the deputy governor gave this advice when he played host members of the AMLSN in his office, Government house, Benin.
According to Idahosa, “As we speak, we still do not have a vaccine manufacturing company or industry in the whole of Nigeria.
“That, to me, is worrisome. This is the heartbeat of the nation. I think we should roll up our sleeves and do what other states in this country have not done before. Let Edo be the beginner.”
He commended the laboratory scientists for their contributions and medical interventions, which he said have given boost to health delivery system in the state.
He noted that healthcare delivery system remains a critical aspect of Governor Monday Okpebholo’s SHINE Agenda
“After security, health is number two. We are laying so much emphasis on health. Edo State is going to be happy with what we are going to do with the health sector,” he emphasised.
Assuring the group of government’s interventions aimed at easing their stress based on raised areas of needs, Idahosa promised that the government would work closely with them.
The Edo State Chapter Chairman of the association, Dr. Ekhaguere Ehigie earlier congratulated the governor and his deputy on the success at the poll and court.
He requested for the setting up of modern molecular laboratories and use of Nano technology to boost diagnosis, accurate laboratory results, and monitoring/surveillance of public health.
