The Benin adage, Edo ēyuma, emwin ókpa órè Edo éko is the most mysterious lore of the ancient Benin Kingdom which pride itself on being the most revered among the black race. The adage simply translates to the Benins reaching an accord on a particular matter when necessary without first holding a conference or waiting for a formal pronouncement from their leadership.
The brain of an average Benin man forged in the heritage of the people seems to be wired in such a manner that has a collective benchmark for what is acceptable and unacceptable. And without having to meet to reach an agreement, they tend to react the same way to such circumstances, either by joyfully embracing your ideology or rejecting it like a plague. Examples are numerous in distant and contemporary history.
When the Edo people decide; from Afemai to Esan, down to the ancestral Benin Kingdom, they do so with the same dexterity as their battle-tested ancestors that kept them insulated against foreign buccaneers, forest hunters, and land grabbers. They make their choices of friends and foes, and no one forces himself on them without victory-bound resistance.
When Edo is tired of you, they don’t hold a conference to decide. It simply settles in their subconscious and a collective revolt follows, like the infamous ouster of Chief Agho Obaseki who styled himself as the leader of the Benin Kingdom after the exile of Oba Ovoramwen N’Ogbaisi by the British in 1897.
May this Kingdom never die. May it flourish and be a blessing to those who love her and seek her support, and may it be a curse to those who hate her and seek her downfall. May it be perfected in history that when the enemies of the Benin Kingdom reincarnated, they faced the same fate of embarrassing defeat.
