Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members in Oyo State are unsure on who to vote for in the 2023 presidential election right now.
Conflicting interests among the party leaders in the State are what led to the development. The misunderstanding comes at a time when the G-5 Governors, notably the governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, are touring the nation to rally opposition to the PDP’s Atiku Abubakar for president.
A cross section of individuals who spoke with journalists explained that they are confused by the varied reactions and comments, arguments and counterarguments from significant party stakeholders regarding the selection of Atiku.
While some PDP members in the State have chosen to follow the example of Makinde and abandon Atiku in favour of the presidential candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Labour Party’s Mr. Peter Obi, or the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Dr. Rabiu Kwankwaso, others have chosen to stick with Atiku.
I will back Seyi Makinde for governor and other PDP contenders, a PDP member in Lagelu Local Government Area of Oyo Central Senatorial District who requested anonymity said, but Atiku will not have my support. I will back every PDP candidate running for governor, house of assembly, senate and house representative, but I will not back Atiku. Asiwaju has my support instead.
However, Hon. Damola Nureni, a party chieftain in the Oyo South senatorial district’s Ido Local Government Area, insisted during a Wednesday interview with journalists that he and other PDP members in Ido can only support Atiku. “We have only Atiku running for president here in the Ido Local Government Area,” he declared. We’re going to back Atiku. “We are unable to challenge the party’s decision. The party has decided that we should back our presidential candidate.
