The Transmission Company of Nigeria has said the effective reduction in the frequency of system disturbance and collapse resulted in an all-time national peak generation of 5,801.6 megawatts that was transmitted on March 1, 2021.

The acting Managing Director, TCN, Sule Abdulaziz, disclosed this in his end-of-year message to stakeholders in the sector, which captured the performance of the company in 2021.

He said the strategic management decisions that were taken in the course of the year had paid off and had enabled the TCN to complete several abandoned projects as well as upgrade and repair vandalised transmission lines and facilities.

Abdulaziz said the decisions led to the installation of new transformers and substations, re-calibration and reconfiguration of transmission lines, as well as transformer protection schemes.

“We take pride in the fact that these measures effectively reduced the frequency of system disturbance and collapse, resulting in an all-time national peak generation of 5,801.60MW, which was successfully transmitted on March 1, 2021. This is quite commendable,” he said.

The TCN boss added, “Other milestone achievements include the creation of Kano Region, bringing to 10 TCN’s regional operations centres across the country.

“To further enhance operational efficiency, we are building over 32 office complexes nationwide, including regional, sub-regional offices and work centres.”

“We have also provided work tools and safety equipment, spare parts, test equipment, among others, to ensure a more conducive working environment and efficiency,” he said.

Abdulaziz noted that to sustain capacity building, the transmission company embarked on training and retraining of all cadres of staff, saying the most significant was the collaboration between the TCN and the World Bank that led to the training of 708 engineers.

He said the TCN was able to record the achievements notwithstanding challenges such as the Right-of-Way encroachment, way leave issues, funding, natural disasters, vandalism of infrastructure and insecurity.

Abdulaziz, however, noted that to address the challenges, the company had continued to engage the appropriate stakeholders and authorities with a view to minimising the impact of the challenges on its operations nationwide.

“We will intensify our efforts on repositioning TCN as a world-class transmission service provider and system operator in line with our vision, mission, and core values through effective rebranding strategies,” he added.
