Edo State’s dominance in Nigerian golf took center stage on Tuesday as the Edo State Golf Association presented a haul of gleaming trophies to the Executive Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, Hon. Amadin Desmond Enabulele, during a courtesy visit at his Benin City office.
Leading the delegation of coaches, athletes, and stakeholders, Mr. Andy Momodu, Chairman of the Edo State Golf Association, said the presentation was a gesture of appreciation for the Commission’s unwavering support and commitment to golf development in the state.
“We boast some of the best golfers in the country. These trophies represent not just victories, but the spirit of Edo excellence in sports,” Momodu declared proudly.
He recounted several impressive feats by Edo golfers on the national and continental stage, highlighting the state’s growing reputation as a golf powerhouse.
Among the standout performances were Ehis Igbinadolor, who finished as first runner-up and Nigeria’s best at the All Africa Challenge/Central Africa Championship, while also clinching the Benin Club Ladies Open title four consecutive times.
Ibrahim Musa dominated the 2025 Python Golf Club Open in Port Harcourt, winning the men’s category and finishing first runner-up in another.
Osaze Iyare emerged overall men’s champion at both the Asaba Governor’s Golf Cup and the Benin Club Open, while Destiny Okoh and Loveth Okoho recorded top placements at the LGAN South-South Golf Open, Benin Ladies Open, and Port Harcourt Open.
Momodu also announced his new appointment as the South-South representative on the Nigeria Golf Federation, describing it as a platform to deepen regional cooperation and promote the sport’s growth across the zone.
Responding, Hon. Amadin Desmond Enabulele commended the association’s achievements and reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to advancing sports development.
“I sincerely appreciate your efforts and congratulate all our champions who continue to make Edo proud,” Enabulele said. “Our vision remains clear, to strengthen grassroots sports and produce athletes who can compete at the highest levels.”
He assured the association of continued collaboration in hosting major golf tournaments across Edo, in alignment with Governor Monday Okpebholo’s vision for sports excellence.
The visit ended on a celebratory note, with the trophies serving as shining proof of Edo’s growing influence in Nigerian and African golf.
