Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has announced that the long-abandoned Doctors’ Quarters on Ezotti Street, Benin City, will be completed and ready for occupation within the next two months.

The governor made the disclosure during an inspection of the facility alongside the Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Blessing Agbebaku, and other senior government officials. The inspection team was led around the project by the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cyril Oshiomhole.

Governor Okpebholo said he embarked on the inspection following reports on the progress of the rehabilitation work and to personally assess the project.

“I have heard a lot about this building and decided to come here today to inspect the project myself. I also came with the Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly so that he can see what funds are being appropriated for,” he said.

According to the governor, the contractor handling the project has assured the government that the renovation will be completed within about six weeks.

“The contractor has assured us that the building will be ready in about one month and two weeks. Once completed, the doctors will be able to move in. I will return to inspect the project again, and I hope the contractor meets the deadline so that our doctors can begin to occupy the facility,” he added.

Speaking during the visit, Health Commissioner Dr. Cyril Oshiomhole praised the governor for reviving a project that had remained neglected for more than four decades.

He described the Doctors’ Quarters as a landmark facility that had suffered years of abandonment, noting that previous administrations failed to rehabilitate the structure despite its importance to healthcare delivery in the state.

“This is the Doctors’ Quarters, and I have known this building for about 40 years. Before work started, the structure was in a dilapidated state. This is the first time any government has undertaken major work on this building in the last four decades,” Oshiomhole said.

He revealed that the renovation has surpassed 85 per cent completion and commended the governor for prioritising healthcare development under his administration’s SHINE Agenda.

“The facility has existed for over 40 years, but in less than one year in office, Governor Monday Okpebholo has commenced and substantially completed its renovation. The project is now over 85 per cent completed,” he stated.

Oshiomhole further expressed confidence that the project would significantly improve the welfare of medical personnel and strengthen healthcare services across the state.

The Doctors’ Quarters project is one of several healthcare infrastructure initiatives being pursued by the Edo State Government as part of efforts to improve working conditions for health professionals and enhance service delivery in the sector.
