Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has paid the medical bills of a pregnant woman and her husband receiving treatment for severe fire burns at the Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital in Ekpoma, offering relief to the family and several other patients in the facility.
The governor made the humanitarian gesture during a visit to the hospital, where he also directed that the medical expenses of other patients admitted in different wards be settled by the state government.
According to Governor Okpebholo, the pregnant woman had approached him seeking financial help for her husband, who sustained serious burns in a fire incident and required urgent treatment.
However, the situation quickly became more critical when members of the governor’s medical team discovered that the woman was already due for delivery.
She was immediately rushed to the Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital, where doctors performed a successful cesarean section that led to the safe delivery of her baby.
“The woman came to seek help for her husband because they needed money to pay his medical bills. When my doctors saw that she was already due for delivery, they quickly rushed her to the hospital where she later gave birth through a cesarean operation,” the governor explained.
Governor Okpebholo said his administration had reached an agreement with the hospital management to settle the bills of the couple as well as those of other patients encountered during his visit.
“We have agreed with the hospital management to pay their bills and that of other patients we met in the wards. They now have no reason to worry about payment, and their treatment can continue,” he said.
He expressed optimism that the burn victim and other critically ill patients, including those in the Intensive Care Unit, would recover soon.
The governor noted that the intervention was part of his administration’s commitment to supporting Edo residents, particularly those facing medical emergencies and financial hardship.
Beneficiaries of the gesture, including patients and their relatives, expressed gratitude to the governor, describing the intervention as timely relief from the burden of mounting hospital bills.
