Youth leaders from Edo State have issued a strongly worded statement reaffirming their commitment to the protection of the Benin Throne, describing it as sacred, untouchable, and central to the identity of the Benin people.
In a press release dated December 30, 2025, the groups, speaking as “footsoldiers of the great Benin Kingdom”, declared that the Benin Throne must never be insulted or ridiculed under any circumstance. According to them, any form of disrespect toward the throne is viewed not merely as an insult to an institution, but as an affront to the people, their ancestors, and the land itself.
Drawing parallels with long-held cultural values, the youth leaders noted that in Benin tradition, insulting one’s parents is regarded as an act of madness and is neither debated nor excused. They stressed that the same cultural standard applies to anyone who speaks against the Benin Throne.
“This is not politics, and it is not empty noise,” the statement read. “It is about heritage, ancestry, and identity.”
The groups emphasized that the Benin people do not require external validation to condemn actions they consider sacrilegious, insisting that the throne represents what is holy and inviolable in Benin culture. They warned against what they described as “reckless words, loose tongues, and cultural arrogance,” adding that such actions would attract firm rejection from the people.
The statement concluded with a call for wisdom and respect, reiterating that the Benin Throne remains untouchable.
The release was jointly signed by Mr. Iyamu Osaro Culture, President of the Aiguobasinmwin Movement Worldwide, and Mr. Uwadiae Iyoha, President of the Otedo Youth Union, both of whom affirmed their groups’ resolve to uphold and defend Benin cultural values.
The declaration ended with traditional proclamations in praise of the Benin monarchy, underscoring the deep cultural and historical significance of the throne to the Edo people.
