31 Suspected Cultists Nabbed in Edo Central Crackdown as Government Issues 7-Day Surrender Ultimatum [PHOTOS]

In a sweeping security operation across Uromi, Esan North-East Local Government Area, the Edo State Special Security Squad, code-named Operation Flush Out Kidnapping and Cultism has arrested 31 suspected cultists, marking one of the largest coordinated raids in the region this year.

The intensified crackdown follows a violent clash between rival cult groups on November 13, 2025, which left one person critically injured. Acting on fresh intelligence, security operatives launched simultaneous raids on November 16, targeting hideouts in Osigbemhe Lane, Arue Street, and the Ewoyi axis of Uromi.

The operation was led by the Chief Security Officer and Principal Security Officer to Governor Monday Okpebholo, working alongside the Uromi Divisional Police Officer, local vigilante units, and personnel of the Nigerian Army.

Security agents stormed suspected enclaves linked to members of the Black Axe and Eiye confraternities. Items recovered included battle axes, cult regalia, charms, drugs, and other incriminating materials, further tying the suspects to the recent outbreaks of violence.

Squad Coordinator Idemudia Noah confirmed that the raids were based on credible intelligence linking the suspects to a dispute over a fraudulent financial transaction that reportedly escalated into the deadly confrontation.

Two alleged ringleaders identified as Gift and Ache remain on the run. Authorities have sealed their properties and launched a manhunt for additional fleeing suspects.

Noah revealed that the first raid targeted a Black Axe–linked apartment on Osigbemhe Lane, while another on Arue Street uncovered an Eiye member’s hideout. All arrested individuals have been transferred to the Nigeria Police Force Area Command Headquarters in Uromi for interrogation.

The Squad has issued a seven-day ultimatum to fleeing suspects to surrender or face what officials describe as “decisive consequences.”

A troubling development, Noah noted, was the presence of underage individuals involved in criminal activities. He warned that the State Government may begin pursuing legal action against parents of minors found engaging in such crimes.

One of those arrested, Nathaniel Kingsley of Ewoyi-Uromi, denied any ties to cultism despite the discovery of a Black Axe battle axe in his residence. He admitted only to involvement in internet fraud.

Reaffirming the Government’s zero-tolerance stance on cultism, Noah vowed that all suspects would face thorough investigation and prosecution.

“Edo State will not serve as a haven for criminals. We are committed to safeguarding our communities and restoring public confidence,” he declared.

The operation concluded with a show of force across Edo Central Senatorial District, underscoring the Government’s renewed resolve to contain emerging security threats.
