Oshiomhole Heads Edo’s Special Committee on Controversial MOWAA Project

In a decisive move to address growing public concern over the governance of the Museum of West African Art (MOWAA), the Edo State Government has announced the formation of a Special Committee to review the museum’s operations and legal standing.

The announcement follows a wave of protests and petitions from citizens, cultural advocates, and the Benin Royal Palace, all raising questions about the management and ownership structure of the museum project.

Recognizing the Benin Royal Palace as the rightful custodian of the Benin Kingdom’s cultural heritage, Governor Monday Okpebholo approved the establishment of the committee to ensure transparency and respect for traditional institutions.

The committee’s mandate includes:
• Engaging with international donors, partners, and trustees of MOWAA;
• Determining the true legal and operational status of the museum;
• Clarifying the rights and stake of the Benin Royal Palace and Traditional Council in the project;
• Making recommendations to the state government for further action.

The committee members are:
1. Sen. Adams Oshiomhole – Chairman
2. Gen. Cecil Esekhaigbe (Rtd.) – Vice Chairman
3. H.E. Lucky Imasuen – Member
4. Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu – Member
5. Roland Itoyah Otaru, SAN – Member
6. Barr. Iryn Omorogiuwa – Secretary

The committee is expected to begin work immediately and submit its findings and recommendations within the shortest possible time.

In a statement signed by Umar Musa Ikhilor, Secretary to the State Government, the Edo State Government reaffirmed its commitment to preserving the Benin Kingdom’s cultural heritage while ensuring accountability and mutual respect in all heritage-related partnerships.

“The Edo State Government remains dedicated to protecting our shared history and cultural legacy while fostering transparent collaboration with all stakeholders,” the statement read.
