In a swift move to fill a key leadership gap, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has appointed Senator Ben Ndi Obi as the new Secretary of its National Convention Organising Committee (NCOC).
The appointment follows the defection of former Secretary, Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State, to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) — a move that sent ripples through the opposition party’s ranks.
According to a statement signed by PDP National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, the decision was approved by the National Working Committee (NWC) acting on behalf of the National Executive Committee (NEC). The party described the appointment as part of its commitment to ensuring a smooth and credible 2025 Elective National Convention, scheduled for November 15–16, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State.
“The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on behalf of the National Executive Committee (NEC), has approved the appointment of Senator Ben Ndi Obi as Secretary of the National Convention Organising Committee (NCOC) for the conduct of the 2025 PDP Elective National Convention,” Ologunagba announced.
He further commended the NCOC, chaired by Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State, for its “tireless efforts” toward the success of the upcoming national event.
The PDP leadership also called on its members, stakeholders, and supporters nationwide to remain united and focused as the party prepares for what many see as a defining convention ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“The NWC calls on all leaders, critical stakeholders, and teeming members of the PDP to remain united, steadfast, and focused on the successful conduct of the National Convention and the overall progress of our great party,” the statement added.
Governor Mbah’s exit marks yet another high-profile defection from the PDP to the APC, but party insiders say the swift appointment of Senator Obi signals the PDP’s determination to maintain stability and momentum as it charts a new course toward 2027.
