Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has announced a cash reward of ₦10 million for Team Edo following their outstanding performance at the 9th National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State, where they clinched third place overall.
Receiving the athletes at Government House, Benin City, alongside his Deputy, Rt. Hon. Dennis Idahosa, the governor commended the team’s resilience, discipline, and commitment, noting that their performance brought pride and honour to Edo State.
“I congratulate our team for securing third position with 33 gold, 18 silver, and 28 bronze medals. This is an impressive achievement, but I challenge you to aim higher and claim first position at the next edition. Edo deserves first place, and with greater commitment and discipline, we will get there,” Okpebholo said.
He assured the athletes of continued government support while stressing the need for stronger dedication to training and competition.
Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, Mr. Amadin Desmond Enabulele, presented the second runner-up trophy to the governor and lauded his consistent support for sports development in the state. He described Team Edo’s medal haul as unprecedented and attributed the success to the administration’s prioritization of athletes’ welfare.
“For the first time, Team Edo returned with 33 gold, 18 silver, and 28 bronze medals — a historic feat in the National Youth Games. This achievement was possible because of the governor’s commitment to sports and to the wellbeing of our athletes,” Enabulele said.
The 9th National Youth Games drew participants from across the federation, with Team Edo standing out as one of the top-performing contingents.
