A truck driver with the transport division of Dangote Cement, Anas Ibrahim, has dragged the company to the National Industrial Court of Nigeria, Kano Judicial Division for sacking him after sustaining injuries in an accident in the line of his duty.
Mr Ibrahim had told the court through his lawyer, Abba Hikima, that on July 1, 2020, while traveling along Lagos-Abeokuta expressway, an oncoming vehicle ran into the Dangote truck he was driving after unloading cement at the company’s depot.
He lost consciousness thereafter and was taken to Sango Otta General Hospital whereupon he was further taken to Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta and Sir Mohammed Sunusi Specialist Hospital, Kano.
He said he suffered three broken ribs, complex fracture on his limbs and other injuries.
According to him, the company abandoned him, refused to settle him medical bills and terminated his employment.
Mr Ibrahim further said the company stopped paying his salary from August 2020 to date, leaving him to take care of his medical bills.
He therefore sought an order of the court directing Dangote to pay him N50 million as compensation for the disabling injuries he sustained, N10m as exemplary damages and N1million as legal fees.
After taking the testimony of the claimant, the presiding judge, E.D. Esele, for cross-examination and defense.
