The Nigerian Army has recorded a major international academic milestone as Colonel T.G. Ajato graduated with honours from the prestigious United States Army War College (USAWC), emerging as one of the top performers among 365 senior military officers and strategic leaders from the United States and allied nations.
In a historic first, Colonel Ajato won the Frank Kelly Writing Award, the institution’s highest academic writing honour, becoming the first International Fellow in the history of the College to receive the coveted prize. The award recognises outstanding research and scholarly excellence and includes Life Membership of the United States Army War College Foundation alongside other distinguished benefits.
The Nigerian officer also earned a Master’s Degree in Strategic Studies, further underscoring his academic distinction and strategic leadership capabilities.
Beyond his award-winning research, Colonel Ajato made a lasting contribution to the institution by developing sample model answers for Oral Comprehensive Examinations, which were approved by the College as reference materials for future students.
Military observers describe the achievement as a significant boost to the growing international reputation of Nigerian Army officers in leading global military institutions.
The accomplishment aligns with the vision of the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, whose command philosophy seeks to transform the Nigerian Army into a more professional, adaptable, combat-ready and resilient force capable of effectively carrying out its constitutional responsibilities within a joint and multi-agency environment.
The Nigerian Army said the feat reflects its continued commitment to developing strategic leaders equipped to address emerging security challenges while contributing to national, regional and global peace and security efforts.
Among those present at the graduation ceremony were Nigeria’s Defence Attaché to New York, Brigadier General E.A. Koleoso, as well as family members, friends and well-wishers who gathered to celebrate the landmark achievement.
