The purported saga surrounding the Edo State Refinery unveils a tale of political manipulation orchestrated by Governor Obaseki in a bid to secure favorable political standing. At the heart of this narrative lies a web of deceit, cleverly woven to deceive the unsuspecting populace of Edo State.
Firstly, it’s crucial to understand the ownership structure of the Edo Refinery and Petrochemical Company Limited (ERPC). Contrary to popular belief, the refinery is solely owned by AIPCC Energy Limited, with no stake held by the Edo State government. However, Obaseki has adeptly utilized this Media vuvuzelas as a tool for political posturing, misleading the citizens of Edo State for his own gain.
During the 2020 campaign period, Obaseki strategically employed the refinery as a centerpiece of his political rhetoric, boldly claiming it was 70% complete. This assertion served as a rallying cry for his supporters, instilling a sense of hope and progress. Yet, as time progressed, the promised advancements failed to materialize, casting doubt on the legitimacy of Obaseki’s claims.
Fast forward to 2023, amidst another election cycle, Obaseki revisited the narrative, now asserting the refinery’s completion to be at 80%. Such figures were to served as a testament to his supposed achievements, conveniently timed to sway public opinion in his favor. However, the lack of tangible evidence to support these claims only added fuel to the growing skepticism surrounding his administration’s integrity.
Further exacerbating the situation, Obaseki announced the receipt of 75,500 barrels of crude oil from the Oza Oil Field in December 2023. Despite this ostensible milestone, the absence of any refined products reaching the market raised serious questions about the refinery’s operational capabilities. The narrative painted by Obaseki seemed increasingly dubious, with promises of progress overshadowed by the stark reality of stagnation.
Now, as the political landscape heats up once again, Obaseki and his allies are doubling down on their deceptive tactics. Claims of receiving an additional 15,000 barrels from the same Oza Oil Field serve as the latest chapter in their saga of deceit.
