Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has intensified moves to reposition the state as a regional aviation and investment hub following high-level talks with the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo, SAN, in Abuja.
At the meeting on Thursday, the two leaders held extensive discussions on the future of Nigeria’s aviation sector, with particular emphasis on the proposed Edo Air initiative—an ambitious state-backed project designed to boost air connectivity, stimulate economic activity, and attract new investments to Edo State.
Governor Okpebholo described the engagement as a critical component of his administration’s economic development strategy, noting that improved aviation infrastructure is essential for growth, tourism, and ease of doing business.
“Today’s discussions are part of our broader efforts to drive growth, improve connectivity, and unlock new opportunities for Edo State,” the Governor said. “We are deliberately positioning Edo as a standout destination for development and investment.”
According to him, the establishment of Edo Air would significantly enhance transportation efficiency, expand tourism, and create a more business-friendly environment for local and international investors.
In his response, Minister Keyamo welcomed the initiative and recalled Benin City’s historic role in Nigeria’s aviation industry, particularly during the era of the defunct Okada Air. He commended the Edo State Government for taking concrete steps to revive that legacy, noting that the project aligns with the Federal Government’s broader objective of strengthening regional connectivity and driving economic growth through aviation.
The Minister assured Governor Okpebholo of the Federal Ministry’s full support, stressing that a functional state-backed airline would improve passenger movement, boost trade, attract investment, and generate employment opportunities, especially for young Nigerians.
Governor Okpebholo expressed appreciation for the Minister’s assurance, describing Federal Government support as vital to the success of the Edo Air project.
“We are encouraged by the Federal Government’s willingness to partner with Edo State on this important initiative. Together, we will build an aviation system that supports growth, tourism, and regional development,” he said.
The meeting underscored the growing collaboration between the Edo State Government and the Federal Government in advancing infrastructure development, economic transformation, and national connectivity.
