Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to environmental protection, public health and responsible governance with the inauguration of the Edo State Environmental Compliance Corps (EECC).

The governor inaugurated the first batch of 100 personnel of the corps, charging them to discharge their duties with courage, integrity and a deep sense of purpose, while ensuring that their actions inspire compliance and their conduct earns public trust.

Speaking at the inauguration, Governor Okpebholo, who was represented by the Commissioner for Finance, Hon. Emmanuel Okoebor, described a clean environment as both a social necessity and an economic imperative that supports productivity, investment and overall well-being.

“The inauguration of the EECC today reaffirms this administration’s commitment to environmental protection, public health and responsible governance,” the governor said. “You are expected to carry out your duties with professionalism, discipline and respect for the law, while working closely with communities to promote environmental compliance and awareness.”

He formally inaugurated the corps and urged the officers to strengthen public confidence through exemplary conduct and dedication to duty.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Environment and Sustainability, Hon. Nosa Adams, explained that the 100 officers constitute the pioneer batch of the EECC, selected through a credible process and subjected to an intensive four-day training programme.

According to him, the corps will be responsible for enforcing the Edo State Environmental Waste Management and Pollution Law recently signed into law by Governor Okpebholo. He described the legislation as holistic, covering all aspects of environmental protection and ecosystem management.

“The inaugurated EECC personnel will be deployed across the three senatorial districts of Edo State to ensure strict enforcement of environmental laws,” Adams said. “To implement these laws effectively, we need trained and knowledgeable personnel who understand environmental regulations and are committed to ensuring compliance.”

He expressed optimism that full implementation of the law would result in a healthier, cleaner and greener Edo State.

The inauguration marks a significant step in the state government’s drive to strengthen environmental governance and promote sustainable development.
