Tensions flared in Auchi, the administrative headquarters of Etsako West Local Government Area, on Wednesday afternoon as commercial motorcyclists, popularly known as Okada riders, believed to be of northern origin, reportedly went on a rampage following alleged cases of extortion by local vigilante members.

According to reports from @johnsonbrowntv, the unrest began around the ICE Junction, Poly Road, and Sabo axis of the town, where the Okada riders were seen assaulting alleged tax-collection agents stationed at various junctions. The riders were said to be protesting ongoing extortion and intimidation by some members of the local vigilante group tasked with community safety and tax enforcement.

In a swift retaliatory move, some local youths, said to be victims of the riders’ aggression, took matters into their own hands and began seizing motorcycles from the rampaging group. The confrontation led to widespread chaos, causing panic among residents and business owners in the affected areas.

The Auchi Vigilante Group was eventually mobilized to intervene and restore calm. Their timely response helped de-escalate the situation. In the aftermath, the group handed over no fewer than 34 seized motorcycles to the Chairman of ANNEWAT, as part of efforts to prevent further escalation.

It was also reported that many local youths had their mobile phones destroyed during the clash. Though no fatalities were recorded, several individuals reportedly sustained injuries. In one particular incident, an Okada rider was allegedly beaten by fellow riders for refusing to join the rampage. He is currently receiving medical attention.

The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of the Auchi Division has since visited the affected areas with a team of officers to assess the situation. An official investigation is now underway to understand the root causes of the conflict and prevent future occurrences.

The authorities are urging calm, even as community leaders call for dialogue between transport unions, the vigilante group, and local enforcement agents to resolve longstanding grievances.

This incident underscores ongoing tensions between local security initiatives and the informal transport sector in Auchi, a town known for its bustling commercial activity and student population.
