Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has been embroiled in controversy surrounding democratic processes, sparking concerns about Nigeria’s democratic state. Some notable incidents include:
- Refusal to Swear in Elected Assembly Members: In 2019, Obaseki refused to swear in 14 duly elected representatives to the Edo State House of Assembly
- Illegal Suspension: The indefinite suspension of Hon. Donald Okogbe, member representing Akoko Edo constituency II, has been deemed malicious.
- Denial of Delegates’ Rights: In February 2024, Obaseki allegedly denied 321 delegates their rights to participate in the PDP Gubernatorial primary elections.
- Withholding Deputy Governor’s Entitlements: Obaseki stopped his deputy governor’s salary and allowances in June 2023.
- Illicit Impeachment: He allegedly illegally impeached his deputy governor in April 2024.
- Disregard for Court Order: Obaseki refused to obey a court order reinstating his deputy governor.
Interestingly, Governor Obaseki has condemned the recent Edo State gubernatorial election outcome as a “travesty of democracy,” urging calm and emphasizing people’s power in democracy.
However, his actions raise questions about his commitment to democratic principles.
