The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State is facing intense pressure to drop its Deputy Director General on Media and Publicity, Rev Olu Martins, following a series of controversies surrounding his actions.
Recently, Martins earned himself a N2 billion defamation suit from the running mate of the Edo APC Governorship candidate, Dennis Idahosa, over alleged libelous statements.
Furthermore, Martins has been trending in a viral video where he justified the vandalization of opposition party campaign materials like billboards and threatened citizens opposed to the candidacy of the PDP Governorship candidate, Mr. Asue Akintunde Ighodalo.
A party chieftain said, “These actions have raised concerns among the Campaign Council and the party itself about our readiness for Issue-based campaign and commitment to a peaceful electoral process”.
The PDP’s Director-General of the Campaign Council for the September 21st governorship election, Matthew Iduoriyemkewen, has described those remaining solidly with the party as assets.
But the party’s actions in recent times have raised questions about its ability to maintain a united front and uphold democratic values.
The PDP’s campaign itself has been marred by internal conflicts and controversies, which have led to the party’s reputation being tarnished.
The party’s inability to address these issues has put pressure on it to take decisive action, including dropping Rev Olu Martins from his role as Deputy Director General on Media and Publicity.
