The rifts between the Governor of Edo state, Godwin Obaseki and his embattled deputy, Comrade Philip Shaibu is getting messier as the days go on.
Eye witness account said that on Thursday evening the ultramodern Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin, was the scene of fierce fighting between elements from the two camps.
It was gathered that in the course of the evening the atmosphere in the stadium complex became very rowdy and frightening all of sudden, as some rough looking chaps gained entrance into the edifice and made straight to the generator room where some technicians were handling some electric faults.
It was reported that before you could say “Jack Robinson” there was exchange of fisticuffs, kicks and throws as is usual in some contact sports and the outcome was serious bodily injury to some people from the two sides. Not only that the suspected hoodlums allegedly swooped on the Permanent Secretary of the Edo State Sports Commission (ESSC) Sabina Chikere, an in law of the embattled Deputy Governor, they molested her and made away with some of her personal belongings, including some huge sums of money in her possession.
This is as it was learnt some onlookers not in the know of what was happening took to their heels for safety in nearby hideouts within the stadium complex.
Gist is that Governor Obaseki’s supporters must have stormed the stadium in a move to stop alleged rumour they heard that Chikere was about moving some vital equipment, documents out of the complex to an unknown destination.
Attempts to reach the different parties was unsuccessful as at press time as they either not pick calls made to their cell phones or the phones were switched off.
