A former lawmaker, Mr. Robinson Uwak, Sunday morning invaded the residence of his wife’s parents along Victory Way Calabar, Cross River State, and ‘abducted’ his one year twin, a boy and girl, in company of a band of soldiers.
Spokesperson for the Cross River State Police Command, Superintendent Irene Ugbo confirmed the incident but added that it is a domestic affair and those involved are not residing in the state.
Mrs Kezie Robinson Uwak, nee Irek, relocated from Abuja to live with her parents in Calabar after her marriage which was contracted on June 30 and july 1, 2020 collapsed.
Our correspondent gathered, Uwak and a band of soldiers invaded his in-law home with a Toyota Prado Jeep, two Toyota Hilux pick ups and an 18 seater bus.
Uwak is currently embroiled in a divorce case with his first wife, Imo, who walked out of the marriage due to some undisclosed reasons.
According to Mrs. Rose Irek, Uwak’s mother-In Law, while the were driving out of their residence to church, two soldiers, in company of other men in mufti stopped her and her husband at the gate.
While the husband wound down the car window and asked them what was the matter, one of the soldiers asked her to come down because she was the person they were looking for.
Mrs. Irek continued that the husband made an attempt to drive off but was blocked by a Prado jeep; and an attempt by the husband to reverse and drive off, another vehicle blocked from behind.
While wondering what was going on, a call came in from her daughter Kezie and when she attempted to answer the call one of the soldiers snatched her cellphone, which she went away with.
Mrs. Irek continued that Kezie succeeded in reaching out to the father and asked them to return to the house as Uwak and some soldiers were at home and forcefully took the twin from her.
Neighbours said that the Hilux vehicles were patrolling Victory Way but they thought three days before the incident and they assumed it was a security patrol in connection with a recent kidnap incident along the street.
Narrating the ugly incident at the NUJ secretariat in Calabar on Monday, Kezia Robinson Awak, the daughter of Roseline Irek and mother of the abducted children said the incident happened at about 8:47 on Sunday morning and accused her husband, Hon. Robinson Awak of being behind the abduction.
In an emotion-laden tone, Kezia said: “At about 8:57am, someone knocked on our door and my younger sister went to check who was there when the door was violently pushed open.
“Suddenly, we saw a lot of armed masked men on military uniform and Mr. Robinson was also with them and wore a face mask. We heard him direct the army to take the children and then promised her that he was going to deal with them
“He violently flung the children into a waiting Hilux van and then they drove away with the children. I am terrified he can harm them because he has boasted on several occasions that he has the capacity to pays the police and army to perpetuate his acts.
“I have suffered terribly in Hon Robinson Uwak’s hands. The society and women groups should please rise up and defend me. I have been abused, bruised and tortured and that is why I ran away from Abuja to stay with my parents in Calabar. Her again in Calabar, he came and violently took my children away. He has also abused and publicly embarrassed my parents and my parents using his influence in the society.”
Giving her own account of the incident at NUJ Secretariat in Calabar, the grand-mother of the children and a director of information in the ministry of Information and Public orientation with the Cross River State civil service, Mrs Roseline Irek, said: “At 8:50 am on Sunday, June 26, 2022, we drove out of the gate and about to go to church, two men blocked our vehicle. They came with a black Prado jeep and blocked the road. We couldn’t move. So, later, two Hilux vehicles and one pilot car came and also packed in front of our vehicle and told me to come down.
“I asked him what the matter was and the supposed-soldier ordered that we should go back to the house and I objected. But my husband pleaded we should go with them. While we were arguing back and forth, the soldier said I am involved in a kidnap case. Within split seconds, soldiers numbering seven took over both sides of the streets and pointed their guns at me and my husband while those in plain clothes were also positioned in strategic places on our street. They were all masked and armed to the teeth.
“Immediately I heard the issue of kidnap, I picked up my mobile phone and tried to call my daughter, Kezie, to tell her to be alert and not to open the door because something is wrong. While dialling the number, one of the plain clothes men walked up to me, twisted my arm and collected my mobile phone from me. Within a few seconds, my daughter now called the father and told him to come back and that they have taken away the children. We then went back to the house and only to discover that our grandchildren had been taken away.”
Spokesman for the Nigerian Army, Brigadier General Onyeoma Nwachukwu insisted those in military uniforms seen with the former lawmaker are not Nigerian soldiers.
According to Nwachukwu, “I have interfaced with 13 Brigade, which is the Nigerian Army formation that covers Calabar. The Brigade does not have any deployment in Satellite Town. Neither did it deploy or attach soldiers to any civilian. It is not in the purview of the Nigerian Army to intervene in such domestic issues. I am not certain the persons you saw are soldiers of the Nigeria Army. More information may be required to fully ascertain who they are.
Uwak did not pick calls or response to SMS from The Southern Examiner on the issue.
