  • The Nigeria Labour Congress, Akwa Ibom State Council, has handed a 14-day ultimatum to Governor Udom Emmanuel beginning from Tuesday to tackle all issues bordering on the welfare of workers in the state.

The Organised Labour threatened to mobilised its members for an indefinite strike if the issues were not addressed within the period.

The resolutions were contained in a communique jointly signed by the Chairman of NLC in the state, Sunny James, and Acting Secretary, Iboro Ibara, after the State Executive Council emergency meeting held on Monday at the Labour Secretariat, Uyo.

The congress listed some of the issues to include payment of 2020 leave grant to all Civil Servants; 2018- 2020 leave grant to workers in the Local Government Service and 2015, 2017- 2020 leave grant to Primary School Teachers.

It called for an immediate end to the use of what it described as dubious and recalcitrant salary consultants to manage the state Civil Service payroll and demanded reversal to qualified payroll officers within the service who were qualified to do the same job.

“Immediate implementation of promotions and payment of accrued promotion arrears to civil servants in the state,” among others are part of the demands.

The congress expressed dismay over the nonchalant attitude of the government towards the plights of retired primary school teachers and next-of-kin of primary school teachers and demanded immediate payment of backlog of gratuities to retirees in the state.
